Deborah Varrie - Live Blue

Prevention is always better than cure, and if we can start to prevent more plastic pollution by educating and persuading people to live more sustainably, we can change the future of our oceans forever.
Hello, my name Deborah.
I'm currently a graphic design student at Inscape design college in Pretoria and am graduating this year. I firmly believe that design can be the solution to the current state of the oceans. Just like you and I are drawn toward good design and things that are beautiful, this action can compel us to change our habits and daily choices to become more sustainable.
The answer to clear the plastic in the oceans is everyone's burden, but we have to make them believe this.
That is why I have designed and created an organisation to educate and create change. The organisation will be called; 'Live Blue'. Prevention is always better than cure, and if we can start to prevent more plastic pollution by educating and persuading people to live more sustainably, we can change the future of our oceans forever.
My idea relies on educating people and persuading them to live more 'Blue'. This means I will create an app that people can use to track their 'Blue' print. The app will have a scanner where the user scans the barcode of every single item they use during the day, it will be user-friendly enough for children too, the app will then track how sustainable they are living by estimating the sustainability of the items they use and the impact of it on the oceans. It will give the user a Blue score and give sustainable alternatives for them to use next time. The app will also allow users to save money on more sustainable items in stores and restaurants. For example, every time the user buys glass bottles of beverages instead of plastic bottles of beverages they could save money by scanning their item on the app. This will require supermarkets and other stores to participate in this venture.
We can create educational quizzes and other forms of educational tips on the app as well. This awareness campaign will include a website as well.
If we mobilise as many people as we can, we may change the future of our oceans. This may be a key solution to the problem!
